How to Do Quantitative Evaluation from Start to Finish: Assessing Quality of Experience and Impact

About This Workshop

This 5-day intensive face-to-face course gives participants a firm grounding in how best to conduct quantitative evaluations. Drawing on state-of-the-art methods, the course will be led by an internationally known expert in quantitative evaluation: Dr Eric Jensen (University of Warwick). The course is relevant to university students, those in formal education, informal learning practitioners, those working in universities, museums, science centers, zoos, aquariums, parks, government, NGOs/non-profits and others who conduct, commission or manage quantitative evaluations of social, cultural or learning initiatives, campaigns or activities.

The training course covers:

  • Introduction to the quantitative evaluation toolkit.
  • Designing quantitative evaluation using questionnaires: From ideas to concrete plans.
  • How to design questionnaires to evaluate quality of experience and impact.
  • Introduction to data management and quantitative analysis using descriptive statistics.
  • Introduction to quantitative analysis with inferential statistics.
  • Demonstrating more advanced options for analysing questionnaire data.
  • Facilitated session in statistics computer lab supporting you in analysing your own questionnaire data that you bring with you to the course (optional).

 

This course will be delivered in English. Access to readings and other training materials will be provided for free. We will be using the computer labs at the Universidade de Aveiro for the hands-on statistics training within the course using the software package SPSS.

The expert leading this course is Eric Jensen (University of Warwick), with contributions from Victor Quintino (Universidade de Aveiro).

Dr. Victor Quintino University of Aveiro, Biology Dept.

Dr Victor Quintino (Assistant Professor, University of Aveiro) is a leading biologist specialising in Marine Biology and Ecology.

He holds a Ph.D from the scientific university Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris VI. He has a special interest in methodologies for the study and the establishment of ecological standards and objectives in coastal systems. During his career he has developed expert knowledge on quantitative research and evaluation and led multiple courses on using quantitative research techniques.

Dr. Eric Jensen Associate Professor

Dr. Eric Jensen (Associate Professor, Dept. of Sociology, University of Warwick) is a leading social scientist specializing in innovative methods of conducting impact evaluation research in informal learning and public engagement contexts.

Jensen is author of Doing Real Research: A Practical Guide to Social Research (SAGE). He has extensive experience designing and conducting quantitative and mixed methods evaluations at institutions including the National Gallery, London Zoo, Natural History Museum, Cheltenham Literature Festival, the British Museum, San Diego Zoo and Bronx Zoo. Dr. Jensen holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge (UK). He teaches social research methods at the University of Warwick.
